Above we have showed the overview and specifications of both the laptops. Now, we are sharing the full review and in-depth comparioson of both laptops.

DESIGN

Lenovo Legion Y530:

This is an all-plastic design though so this is not a metal-based laptop but this is kind of the entry point for their gaming stuff. So you’re not going to get all the fancy accouterments on more expensive computers.

Lenovo Legion Y730:

I’m very pleased with the overall build quality. This is an all-metal design for the most part, I think the bezel here on the inside of the display is plastic but the rest here is metal.

It feels very solid and well-constructed, fairly attractive and relatively compact given it is a 15-inch gaming laptop. So overall it did a nice job putting this device together.

WEIGHT AND DIMENSIONS

Lenovo Legion Y530:

The weight on this one is 5.1 pounds or 2.3 kilograms. It does have some weight to it but that is to be expected with these gaming laptops.

The dimensions of the laptop are 36cm in width, 26.7cm in-depth, and about 2.5cm in height, so fairly average for a 15” machine.

Lenovo Legion Y730:

The weight overall is 4.8 pounds or 2.2 kilograms and not all that heavy.

The dimensions of the laptop are 41.2cm in width, 30.5cm in-depth, and around 2.55cm thick at the highest point.

DISPLAY

Lenovo Legion Y530:

This has a 15.6 inch 60 Hertz display IPS which is very nice. 250 nits of brightness according to their specifications, decent viewing angles on it, it’s bright enough in most circumstances and I’m very pleased with the image quality on it. It is a matte display, so it’s not as shiny as it might be if it was a glossy display of course so that was good to see on there too. Not a touch display though but I don’t think that really matters in this instance.

There is also 144 Hertz display on this configuration, although I don’t know how well that would work with a 1050 TI graphics processor, so if you want a faster than 60 Hertz refresh rate you can get it eventually. But I think for this particular configuration the built-in 60 Hertz display is just fine. It does seem to hold itself in place pretty well, so the hinge feels pretty decent on it.

The webcam is on the bottom. So you might have a little up the nose action going when you’re chatting with somebody.

Lenovo Legion Y730:

It’s got a 15.6 inch display, mine is a 60 Hertz IPS display and it looks like some international configurations might have a 144 Hertz display that supports g-sync. It is nice and bright, Lenovo say it’s around 300 nits and I would say that’s probably about right. It looks pretty bright to me under normal room lights and overall the display is decent.

I also like the fact that when you’re moving the display around, the bottom portion of the laptop doesn’t come with it. It’s really sure-footed.

Because of the thin bezel design, they had to move the webcam down to the lower bezel. It’s a 720p webcam not all that great and you’ll get these up the nose shots as a result of its location on the display. So that’s probably the only real issue.

KEYBOARD AND TOUCHPAD

Lenovo Legion Y530:

The keyboard isn’t bad. It’s a typical Lenovo design, a really decent travel to the keys, very comfortable to type on also not too bad for gaming. It is backlit but it’s only white light. You don’t get a configurable multicolored thing but they do have more expensive versions. The deck is rubberized so you get a good grip on it but it also picks up Whalley fingerprints and that kind of stuff pretty easily.

I like the trackpad quite a bit. It has a separate button. It does have a nice click to it and you’ve got a real button here versus a click pad which some gamers might prefer. You even have a number pad on here because it is a rather large laptop.

Lenovo Legion Y730:

I’m very pleased with the keyboard. I’m usually pretty fond of these Lenovo keyboards as it is. This one’s a little nicer because as you can see it’s got some lighting on there courtesy of Corsair. You have a lot of options for how these Keys are lit, you could have individual key lighting or do some schemes like I’ve got here with the colors pulsating through and you also have lights on the side, so you’ve got both vents here with some additional lighting and you can also light up the back too. These lights can be turned off if you think that’s too obnoxious in the workplace or something.

The trackpad is also very nice. It’s not a click pad, you’ve got two buttons down, so that was good and very comfortable.

I/O

Lenovo Legion Y530:

  • Leftside – There’s an air exhaust vent, USB 3.1 Type-A port and 3.5mm audio combo jack, while the right has another USB 3.1 Type-A port, status LED and air exhaust vent.
  • Backside – From left to right, there’s a USB 3.1 Type-C port, although no mention of Thunderbolt here, Mini DisplayPort, USB 3.1 Type-A port, HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet, power input, and Kensington lock.
  • Frontside – It is just smooth plastic, with the two two-watt speakers found towards the left and right-hand sides.

Lenovo Legion Y730:

  • Left from the back – There’s an air exhaust vent, 3.5mm audio combo jack, USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C port with Thunderbolt 3 support, and left speaker near the front.
  • Rightside – We’ve got the right speaker towards the front, single USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A port, and air exhaust vent, so minimal cables to get in the way if you’re right-handed.
  • Backside – There are two air exhausts near the corners.
  • From left to right – We’ve got mini DisplayPort and HDMI outputs, the HDMI seems to be 2.0, the version wasn’t listed but I could run 4K at 60Hz, followed by two USB Type-A ports, one is 3.1 Gen1 while the other is 3.1 Gen2, Gigabit Ethernet, power input and lock slot.

GAME PERFORMANCE

Lenovo Legion Y530:

  • Witcher 3 – What I did here is just going with the GeForce recommended settings, so I was getting about 57 to 61 frames per second on the witcher with those recommended settings, you can, of course, turn some things down maybe to get a little more frames per second.
  • GTA 5 – This also came in exactly around 60 frames per second. The G-sync was off and it was it just is running right at that 60 frames per second mark.
  • Fortnite – It was running at high settings there and we were pretty much right around 60 frames per second. But I’ve stayed above 60 more reliably when I went down to the medium settings.

Lenovo Legion Y730:

All of the games you’re about to see, I ran them at 1080p at their lowest settings, just to get a maximum frame rate count.

  • Witcher 3 – I was able to get between 60 and 75 frames per second again lowest settings at 1080p on there.
  • GTA 5 – I was seeing anywhere from 120 to 150 frames per second again running at 1080p at the absolute lowest settings.
  • Fortnite – It was running at around 90 to 110 frames per second at the lowest settings you could easily get it going at 60 for a good balance of visuals and performance.

SPEAKERS

Lenovo Legion Y530:

It does have built-in speakers with Dolby Atmos apparently that sounds ok, it’s not the most dynamic range of sound but a little better perhaps cheaper laptops might deliver for you there, so that isn’t bad.

Lenovo Legion Y730:

Speakers are on the bottom. It’s got, stereo speakers. They don’t sound all that great, they’re very loud but there’s not a real wide range of sounds, so one thing to probably get if you’re looking for a broader range of sound with a little more punch to it is to hook up some headphones or something but generally for laptop speakers they are very clear and very loud they just don’t have a very wide range of sound.

Y530 vs Y730

CONCLUSION

Lenovo Legion Y530:

Overall, it’s not a bad gaming laptop for the price. It seems to perform where I would expect it to perform, not a bad build quality either despite the fact it is plastic so they’ve done a nice job putting something together that I think hits a price point quite well with not too many sacrifices. My only concern is the GPU because this 1050 Ti has been around for a while probably about a year or more now which is an eternity in the computer industry. If you are satisfied with the game performance, this is not a bad entry point.

Lenovo Legion Y730:

Overall, I am very happy with the industrial design of this computer. It’s very well built and I like how compact it is. If you are using this in the workplace, if you turn the lights off, it doesn’t look all that obnoxious. It doesn’t scream out gaming until you turn the lighting on and have all this pulsating color going on. I think it could work well for video editors and others who have high demand activities they want a computer that has a very functional cooling system.
