DESIGN
Dell XPS 13 7390
I think it feels a lot heavier in hand because it is made of metal. On the XPS 7390, you finally have the webcam which is not at the bottom. The speaker was already decent perhaps not upwards firing. Within the press of the keyboard, you can hear the table resonating noise which is a strange one. You can also see some flex on the keyboard. It’s really clicky.
It is made of aluminium metal, so you don’t have to worry about the build quality of it. The hinge of the XPS 7390 is also flexible and sturdy to use. The design of this one is also so sleek and light.
Dell XPS 13 9310
This latest incarnation of the XPS 13 measures just under 15 millimeters at its thickest point and it weighs a measly 1.2 kilos. So, this really is one of the most portable machines, a strong rival to that Macbook Air.
The sleek aluminum frame is seriously impressively tough as well. For added durability, you’ve even got a bit of gorilla glass 6 on that screen as well, so hopefully, that should prove nice and scratch-resistant.
Even though this is a tiny 13-inch laptop, you still got a very comfortable typing experience more like a 14 or 15-inch laptop. Each key has afforded plenty of space, no single keys are super squishy. Also, despite that crazy thin design, you’ve got a surprise and travel depth when you strike each key. You’ve got your two tiers of backlighting and basically, everything just works as expected.
On the top corner of that keyboard, you’ll find the Dell XPS 13’s power button and that’s actually got a built-in fingerprint sensor as well. Literally, with just a quick tap of that button, you’ll be into the laptop in less than a second.
DISPLAY
Dell XPS 13 7390
There is a great Full HD infinity edge touch display with 3840 x 2160 resolution and a non-touch display with 1920 x 1080 resolution. The touch display has a great smooth texture on it. The brightness and the color accuracy of the display are also so good to see. The thin bezels make the viewing experience wonderful.
Dell XPS 13 9310
When you open up the laptop, you will be impressed by that 13.4 inch IPS screen which completely fills the inside of that lid showcasing some of the skinniest bezels of all time and it is a lovely display too. You’ve got Full HD Plus resolution which is plenty for a panel this size.
So, for those videos and everything else look perfectly sharp and you don’t miss out on any finer details when editing. Color reproduction is spot-on too, you’ve got a full 100% of the sRGB gamut covered and 77% of the Adobe RGB with deep blacks and crisp white serving up sharp HDR style contrast. Likewise, the XPS 13 9310 is great when you consume media. The 16 by 10 aspect ratio helps to reduce margins for movies and again those visuals make for an eye-popping fantastic viewing experience.
The screen surface is anti-reflective and the display brightness itself can stretch from 50 nits all the way up to a rather mighty 500 nits. So certainly, if you want to work outdoors that is not a problem.
BATTERY
Dell XPS 13 7390
The Dell XPS 7390 has an integrated 4 cell 52 watt-hour battery inside it. With this one, it gives around 8 hours of battery life in light usage with less brightness. The touch display takes more battery life than the regular one. The more things you do at the same time with higher brightness, the less you will have the battery life.
Dell XPS 13 9310
The final key factor when judging ultra-portables is the battery life and that’s an area where the XPS is usually put in a quite tidy performance. If you work on it or doing some video or photo editing then you can get the battery of around 4.5 to 5 hours of use out of it from a full charge. If you’re just gonna be watching a bit of youtube or something a bit more basic, then you can expect to get a lot longer than that. As far as ultra-portable laptops, that battery life is pretty damn decent.
WHICH TO BUY?
If you are a developer and your compile time isn’t super long, I think the XPS 7390 is a pretty decent fit if you can afford it. Dell XPS 13 9310 with that Intel Tiger Lake action stuffed inside and certainly, if you’re not swayed by Apple’s Macbooks, then this is definitely one of the better ultra-portable laptops.
In my opinion, XPS 9310 is definitely a better one and most of the things and problems are upgraded but you should pay a little more for that. Even the XPS 7390 is a good one to buy if you want to pay a little less and want a good package.
