INTRODUCTION:
Dell G5 15 5500
This is one of the most recent revolutionary gaming laptops from Dell. The G5 5500 is the latest model in the G5 series which is a gaming laptop. Thermal issues are solved a little bit and the performance is also improved.
Dell G5 15 5505 SE
I think this is going to be the cheapest high-performance gaming laptop for this period of time. This one is made from the new combination of AMD CPU and AMD GPU.
DESIGN:
Dell G5 15 5500
The new Dell G5 5500 laptop features a bold gaming-inspired design that is available in the interstellar dark. Even though it is black, it has got a nice glitter which makes it different from all other gaming laptops. The G5 5500 does not feel particularly premium. The top chassis is made of plastic, the palm rest area is plastic and even the bottom chassis is made out of plastic. This gives off the feeling that it is not a very expensive gaming laptop but at the price range of this is not exactly a cheap laptop either.
We have the input devices of the G5 5500 and in this regard, it is not very good. The keyboard has very limited key travel, so you get a shallow typing experience which is not very pleasant if you want to do a lot of typing on this laptop. The shorter key travel and the tactility of the keys will be helpful in certain games. As for the trackpad itself, it’s actually quite good. It can track my fingers quite accurately and it has a smooth surface as well for easier usage. I do wish it’s ever so slightly wider for a more comfortable browsing experience but I can do just fine with this square trackpad.
Dell G5 15 5505 SE
The build on this machine is not my favorite. It’s not just the aesthetic but it’s also the material choices themselves. This is a laptop that looks cheap. It is cheap, it’s not a super expensive gaming laptop but there’s something about the design language and the color choices and the material choices that they have on this thing that just exaggerated the cheapness of it. Even the color of this thing is like light gray material that looks like a nice shiny material but just got scuffed so badly, it became the dull flat gray but at the same time, it still has that rainbow holographic Dell logo. The bottom also has weirdly two-toned half Matte and half super glossy plastic.
There is one thing about the build that would probably concern everyone, it’s the hinge of the screen. It’s a design where the hinge is closer to the center of the laptop. So, every time you open and close the display, it kind of torques the screen and torques the hinge in a weird way. I do think that the interior of this device is well done, it’s like a simple plain black and you have a pretty solid screen.
DISPLAY:
Dell G5 15 5500
With the new Dell G5, every detail of your game gets magnified with the 120-hertz FHD display with a two-sided narrow bezel and an optional 144hz panel. Further enhancing the gaming experience of the G5 5500 is the laptop’s 15.6 inch 1080p screen with a fast 144hz refresh rate. Thanks to this high refresh rate, you will get very good motion clarity in fast-paced games. While that’s great, there is one shot coming with the screen. The thing is it’s a VA panel, so compared to an IPS screen, you will not get very good viewing angles. However, it’s worth pointing out that VA panels have a better contrast ratio compared to IPS screens, so you will get more vibrant colors as well as deeper blacks with this panel.
Dell G5 15 5505 SE
Our unit is running the upgraded 144-hertz panel. It’s fast, it’s pretty bright reasonably color accurate. The base model has a 60 Hertz screen right now which isn’t great for gaming.
FEATURES:
Dell G5 15 5500
It comes with an Intel Core i7 10750H processor, an NVIDIA RTX 2060 GPU, 16 gigabytes of RAM, 512 gigabytes of SSD storage, and a fast 144hz screen. Based on these specifications, the G5 5500 is definitely a reasonably powerful gaming laptop that will be able to offer good enough frame rates in AAA games.
This has a dual-fan cooling system that keeps the system responsive and cool during intense gameplay. It has the game shift key which is the f7 to give your game a turbo boost without having to leave your gameplay.
Everything about this system makes it grand, especially the dual speakers with 3D audio making you hear every move with crisp clarity. What makes it really stand apart from other gaming systems is the Alienware command center, holding as a lighthouse on all Dell gaming series. It gives you full control over your hardware and software so that you can personalize the space and the setup the way you want. The command center gives you easy access to your games and the ability to fine-tune settings just how you want them.
Dell G5 15 5505 SE
The good thing is that it’s running an AMD CPU and also an AMD GPU. This is actually the world’s first gaming laptop that’s running both the combination. It’s not just the fact that it’s running them individually, both the CPU and GPU are great but the combination of the two allows them to do something pretty interesting.
It’s a pretty good keyboard, I like it but it’s a little cramped because of the number pad. There are people that always want number pads on their devices. For the people that don’t use the number pads and they’re just using the keyboard it does feel a little bit tight, not the layout like the layout is spacious enough it’s just on the left side where your hand is for the WASD Keys. There’s very little space left on this device for you to place your wrist on while you’re playing games. The keys themselves are fine like it’s like a very comfortable typing experience. The keystroke is pretty responsive could be a little bit faster but I think most people will enjoy this keyboard. The touchpad is nothing I can complain about it. It’s plastic but it does the job and it’s got Windows precision drivers which is always a win.
The port selection is quite good and this device has got an Ethernet jack, three display outputs, an HDMI, a mini display, and a display port that comes out of USB-C. It also has three USB A and an SD card slot that is stacked, it’s a pretty solid port selection. It does not support Thunderbolt 3 though.
Inside, you have access to two RAM slots, a Wi-Fi card, it’s a killer card so you can replace that if you would like. It’s got two NVMe drives and you can also see the thermal system with the three heat pipes and then on the left and right, you have the speakers. They don’t sound great, they sound exactly how you would expect an 870 dollar gaming laptop to sound like.
PERFORMANCE:
Dell G5 15 5500
The new Dell G5 5500 has Windows 10 which makes the entire gaming experience a power-packed one. With up to 10th gen intel core i7 processors, it assures you numerous uninterrupted gaming rounds. With its immersive graphics, you can game at higher settings with crystal clear detail and smooth gameplay as it has options of up to NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti or you can even go for RTX 2070 with Max-Q technology. The RAM comes with up to 8GB GDDR6 of dedicated memory making your gaming rounds faster. The beauty of this laptop lies in its reinforced strength with faster boot-ups with 1 TB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD.
You will be able to get well over 60 frames per second in popular games like Apex Legends, Call of Duty: Warzone, and of course, Valorant if you’re into that game. It’s worth noting that the GTX 1660 Ti is actually very comparable to the RTX 2060. You don’t get RTX-specific features like ray tracing and the LSS with the 1660 Ti but you do get about the same raw performance. So, if the frame rate is what you care about, you do not have to worry about it at all.
Dell G5 15 5505 SE
Our unit is running the 8 core 4800H from AMD a very capable processor. It’s good for games, it’s great for any kind of application that can make use of lots of cores. This thing pushes out really good numbers for a CPU. The base model runs the 4600H, it’s a similar type of architecture but it’s got six cores instead of eight that six-core chip is gonna be just as good as an eight-core for the vast majority of games but they both share the same GPU. The GPU is 5600M from AMD, a very capable graphics chip and it really surprised me as to how good it is. It’s similar to an RTX 2060 Max-Q, slightly better in many cases but not as good as the 2070 Max-Q. The numbers we’re seeing are incredibly good for an $880 laptop.
Because it’s running an AMD CPU and an AMD GPU, it uses the tech from AMD called “Smart Shift”. It’s something that is unique to a mean you can only use this stuff when you’re running the combo and it basically redistributes power to whatever you’re doing. So, if you’re playing a game and it’s more GPU dependent, it’ll pump more wattage to the GPU to give you the best possible performance in that particular scenario but if you’re doing video editing like a more CPU dependent thing, it’ll pump more wattage to the CPU. It’s basically free performance, it is a bonus to the system. Performance is great.
The thermal performance is pretty good. It hits like 84 to 85 degrees at peak. So, it’s reasonably well managed but you do need to have the fans cranked to hit that. There’s like a G button that enables game shift and it’s just faster fans for the system. You get the best possible performance when that’s enabled but the fans are relatively loud.
BATTERY:
Dell G5 15 5500
You can quickly charge your system with a 51 or 68-watt hour battery. The battery life is not amazing in this one and also you can’t expect great battery life in a gaming laptop. In the 51WHr battery, it gives around 3 hours of usage while in 68 WHr battery will give you around 4 to 4.5 hours of usage.
Dell G5 15 5505 SE
It’s got a 68 WHr battery, I think this is the bigger battery. This got me five and a half hours of battery life which is respectable.
WHICH TO BUY?
The Dell 5500 has an Intel based processor and NVIDIA graphics, that combination works very well. The Dell G5 SE, a very powerful device for the money. I think this is going to be a very difficult device for other competitors to beat in terms of that price to performance ratio. It’s just really good when you combine the AMD CPU and GPU together but it’s got some quirks like the design, hinge, and 60Hz refresh rate in the base model. In my opinion, you can give a try to the Dell G5 SE version as it comes at a low cost and works very well than the Intel-based processors.
