INTRODUCTION:

Dell G5 15 5500

This is the latest version of the Dell G5 series laptops. This laptop has intel based latest processor and NVIDIA graphics which gives a great performance in gaming.

Dell G5 15 5590

This is Dell’s mid-tier gaming laptop, so there’s also the G3 and the G7. If you’re looking for that Inspiron 7577 successor with a GTX 1660 TI at $1000, you’ll need to step down to the G3 for that.

Dell G5 5500

DESIGN:

Dell G5 15 5500

The G5 does look cool. The keyboard is got four-phase RGB. It’s got a cool Tron like led strip running at the bottom edge of the device. The whole laptop of Dell G5 5500 is made of plastic which looks a little cheap but that’s where Dell saves money to increase its performance. The logo of Dell on the back of the laptop just presses down which feels a bit cheap in terms of build quality.

Dell G5 15 5590

The build quality is excellent like really good and not just that but it feels like a high-quality laptop as well. Some of the premium gaming laptops will be super rigid but they just feel like they’re made of cheap plastic. This is built well, it feels like metal and it looks good too.

The hinge is one hand open and there’s a very little screen wobble when using it on your lap which I like. The keyboard deck is solid, there’s basically no flex on the chassis and the screen is also quite rigid. There’s some flex but I guess because of how thick it is, it’s just a little bit stiffer than other plastic screens. Also, the rubber feet on the bottom are really grippy. So, there’s no sliding around on your desk or anything like that. Aside from the hideous gloss coating on the upper deck, they nailed the build quality on this thing.

DISPLAY:

Dell G5 15 5500

The display is a 144hz display with 300 nits brightness and that’s great for high fps. According to our Spider EliteX: monitor calibration tool, the screen is limited with just 93 sRGB coverage and that translates to about 67% NTSC coverage. This display is better enough for gaming purposes.

Dell G5 15 5590

This particular comparing unit is running a 1080p 60 Hertz panel but there’s an optional 144 Hertz option. This panel in particular is not that impressive. The brightness is decent 275 nits, so a bit on the dimmer, not the worst but the color gamut and the color accuracy is quite poor and if you’re a content creator, this won’t really cut it. However, if you’re just looking to game on this thing, that shouldn’t really be a concern for you.

It’s an IPS panel, so it’s got good viewing angles, good contrast, and the bustles are relatively thin for a laptop at this price range. It’s fine for most people but artists should probably get something with better colors.

Dell G5 5590

FEATURES:

Dell G5 15 5500

This system comes configured with a 15.6-inch anti-glare display with 300 nits brightness which is pretty bright allowing you to game and be productive in pretty much nearly any bright-lit environment, although the Dell XPS 15 is a 400 nit display. This is boarding a 144hz high refresh rate panel and coupled with an NVIDIA RTX 2060. I had really high gaming expectations for this device but more in that in a second. A 10th generation core i7 10750H powers, this device paired with 16 GB of RAM plop that 2933 megahertz upgradeable up to 32 GB of RAM. This device does not have a fingerprint reader at even this much price range.

This gets really hot sometimes, so it will be purchase a laptop cooler with this laptop. When we tested, we saw temperatures by the hinge, and that’s up to 60 degrees celsius, and surprisingly, on the keyboard deck, it is reaching 53 degrees celsius.

You can customize your system for less than a thousand or approximately a thousand dollars, that’s where I feel this system belongs at that price. After all, this system was getting just too hot it was getting really hot and what we uncovered is that there was significant throttling up to 25% because the CPU was overheating.

Dell G5 15 5590

The price point of the G5 is $1350 for the 1660 TI and $1450 for the RTX 2060 but just keep in mind that Dell does actually have a separate laptop to hit that 1000 dollar price point with the 1660 TI.

There’s a full-size keyboard with a number pad on the right. These switches are good, a little bit shallow but it’s not too heavy and I like the layer. I also like the fact that all of your volume, your media, and brightness controls are in the function row, it’s such a minor detail but it’s really annoying when companies put the volume controls on like the arrow keys or the number pad. It’s also got a three-stage white LED backlighting and it’s a bit shallow but I had no problems gaming or typing the script on this keyboard.

The trackpad is okay, it has all of your settings like Windows precision drivers, accurate tracking, and good buttons but the plastic surface gives it a bit more resistance than a glass surface when you press them harder during something like drag-and-drop.

Unlike most gaming laptops that fire the speakers down onto the table, these fire towards you from the front and that automatically makes these a bit more pleasant sounding. It’s loud, it’s got good clarity. The bass is kinda lacking and the default equalizer setting just wrecks the clarity by boosting the bass but once you disable that they sound pretty good.

On the left, you have a Thunderbolt 3 port, USB A, headphone jack. There’s a USB A and a full-size SD slot on the right and on the rear is an Ethernet port, DisplayPort, a third USB A port, and an HDMI port. Personally, I like the whole display outputs on the back deal, it kind of tidied everything up and they’re going to route behind your desk anyway, so it just makes sense.

PERFORMANCE:

Dell G5 15 5500

The Dell does offer different configurations of the new G5 and personally, I’d recommend a Core i5 1660 Ti variant. The real-world performance gap between a 1660 Ti and RTX 2060 can be as little as 15%. The way Dell has priced these systems can feel a little bit like a riddle. I just don’t see how Dell priced a 400 gap between a 1660 Ti system and its RTX 2060 system.

With the 10750H, the benchmarks were hardly overwhelming. In Cinebench 20, we got a multi-core score of 3234 points and a respectable 457 points as a single-core score and that’s thanks to the 10750H’s max boost of 5 gigahertz. We got a time spy score of 5757 and when we compare that to the 6038 of the HP Omen. The gears benchmark score of 79 fps in high settings and 72 fps in ultra settings that’s on par with what we would expect the laptop with an RTX 2060 to do, but when we compared to the benchmark of the Omen 15 that has a 1660 Ti comes rather depressing which leads me to believe that this system has a throttling issue.

Dell G5 15 5590

This laptop has two RAM slots, they all come with both slots filled even the 8 GB models and m.2 slots with a secondary 2.5-inch drive slot as well as the upgradable Wi-Fi card, this one is the Intel 9560 and you can pull about 570 megabits per second. For SSD, they’re using is a Toshiba drive but the write speeds on these smaller drives are unbelievably slow. The 9750H paired with the RTX 2060 pushes up some pretty strong performance. The dual-channel Ram also helps, they didn’t go single-channel here.

The CPU does get quite hot, it averages above 90 degrees and it peaks at 100 regularly but it doesn’t throttle too hard and the GPU will sit between 77 and 81 degrees depending on the game and this is with the max performance thermal profile. Fan noise is rather quiet or max, they are higher pitch than other fans but even then they’re not particularly loud or anything.

BATTERY:

Dell G5 15 5500

This does have a respectably sized 4-cell 68 watt-hour battery giving you up to six hours of service before you start. It does have a massive 240 watt AC power supply. This power adapter is just massive.

Dell G5 15 5590

Unlike the XPS 15 where you can remove the 2.5-inch drive slot for a bigger battery, this only comes with a 60 watt-hour battery and battery life is rather short. This one gives around three and a half maybe four hours of battery life with normal use. The USB C port does not support charging, unfortunately.

Dell G5 5590

WHICH TO BUY?

Dell G5 just has no business being in that territory unless they focus on their cooling solution because this thing gets really hot. Having experience with other laptops like the Asus, HP Omen, and even with the Dell XPS, at this price point I just really can’t recommend the G5 because of its system. The G5 5590 as a whole is a pretty good laptop and I think for a lot of people, the sacrifices that they made to bring this down in price. So, the trackpad and the speakers compared to the really high-end laptops are completely non-issues because you got a mouse and a pair of headphones. However, I don’t like the screen, I wish I had better colors and I wish the thermals were a bit better but that’s really about it. For gamers specifically, I think they did a pretty good job.

If you don’t have any problem with the heating issues then the latest G5 5500 will be better to buy as it is better in gaming and performance. Otherwise, you should choose any other gaming laptops in this price range.
