DESIGN
HP Pavilion 15
It’s a budget laptop, so we’re not looking at something that’s designed to be fancy. It’s just designed to get the job done and that’s reflected in the overall build. While the build is in the natural silver and feels like it’s a metal build for the most part, you’re quickly reminded that it is not an ultra-premium machine.
The keyboard generally is pretty solid. Also, the trackpad is fairly large so if that’s a concern of yours how large is the trackpad going to be, HP’s got your back here that is something that they’ve made sure of with the Pavilion line now.
Lenovo Ideapad 5
Design is not only something that affects the outside look, the appearance, the style but it’s something that directly affects your laptop using behavior. For example, if your laptop is made of aluminum, you’ll be more likely to be more gentle with it to handle it with more care.
When you have a product made of plastic, then that’d be easier to carry around. Plastics are less prone to scratching and denting and with something that has a complete matte finish and cuffed corners, it’s simply a joy to use. The Ideapad is all curved up together with a super thick matte finish, so it feels very sturdy and durable.
This is probably the thickest matte finish that I’ve seen, it’s very nice on the touch but because of this, it sucks in a good amount of sweats and fingerprints. So, it’s definitely a big minus for those of you with sweaty hands.
The external design is also very simple. With only the Lenovo logo at the corner and this premium matte finish with a simplistic solid design together with the same matte finish all around and the monochromatic gray, it’s one of the things that make for the distractionless experience.
The frame is also very sturdy, I can comfortably throw this thing around. The long hinge is also solid, allowing you to open the machine easily by one hand, partly because of the protruding part where the webcam sits that gives you a ledge to put your finger underneath.
Overall, this is a very simple design, nothing flashy or glamorous.
Another thing that would help you concentrate when using this machine is the keyboard. Lenovo’s keyboards always have one thing that I like that is the large and curved keycaps. It somehow always feels very reliable together with the familiar layout. So, it’s very hard to mistype on this.
However, compared to the more premium Lenovo devices, the typing feel is not as satisfying. Key travel is a bit short, the keycap is plastic even though it has a nice smooth finish. So overall, I think this is a good typing experience in this price range with the familiar layout, large keycaps that wrap around your fingers.
This keyboard will help you focus on your work because you don’t have to worry about getting used to a new keyboard or mistyping. There is also a numpad if you need it. The touchpad underneath has a decent size, comfortable tracking feel. You definitely can use this without a mouse.
DISPLAY
HP Pavilion 15
The display is not a high-resolution one, we are not even looking at a full HD display. There are a lot of people out there that on a budget are still going to be interested in this regardless of the display’s resolution and 250 nits brightness because its internal components are still fairly solid.
This is a fairly low-res display, viewing angles are not great that’s to be expected but when it comes to gaming that’s the interesting part about these more budget-friendly machines with Intel’s 11th gen is that gaming should be a little bit more practical on it, especially since you won’t be downscaling from 4K or full HD.
Lenovo Ideapad 5
There’s only one thing that I’m not so sure about this machine which is the full HD TN panel. Now, if this sounds like a complete deal-breaker for you, the Ideapad 5 also comes with an IPS display option and it’s also touch-able. If you’ve used a good IPS panel before, then it’s really hard to go back toward TN, it has pretty poor color accuracy and limited viewing angles.
I almost always recommend an IPS panel but from a student’s point of view, if the display is not the most important thing for you while the price is, then the TN panel is a good budget option. In return, you’d have nice and thin bezels around it. For the 15 inch size, this is a very portable machine at only 1.38 kilograms.
BATTERY
HP Pavilion 15
This latest-gen Pavilion 15 has a 3 cell 41 watt-hour lithium-ion battery inside it. It also comes with a 65 watt AC power adapter for charging the laptop. This laptop supports HP’s fast-charge system, so it will charge 50% battery in only 30 minutes.
Lenovo Ideapad 5
The 57-watt hour battery gives about 7 hours of regular mix-use which is pretty good.
WHICH TO BUY?
The Pavilion 15 is really a budget-conscious purchase, this is not the high performer. It’s more about getting exactly what you pay for which is a functional machine. This is for those of you who are not looking for something flashy but are just looking for something for your money literally.
This is going to be one of your least expensive ways to get access to an 11th gen core i7 Intel processor. It’s a laptop without anything showy or flashy. It’s a laptop that simply does not fuss, it doesn’t mess around.
Everything from the material, the design, the keyboard, or the stability in performance, all work towards one purpose giving you the highest level of concentration and productivity.
The biggest minus point is probably the display but if you have the actual box then the choice is entirely yours to upgrade to an IPS panel.
Both the Pavilion and Ideapad are working well and good to buy. So, the decision is in your hands that which one is more attractive in your perspective considering all the features and functions.
