In comparison to the older and possibly less expensive 5800H, AMD’s Ryzen 7 6800H isn’t really worth the extra money. To demonstrate why, I’ve compared both in games.
Specs Comparison
CPU NAME | RYZEN 7 5800H | RYZEN 7 6800H |
CORES/THREADS | 8/16 | 8/16 |
BASE CLOCK | 3.2 GHZ | 3.2 GHZ |
BOOST CLOCK | 4.4 GHZ | 4.7 GHZ |
CACHE (L2/L3) | 4MB / 16MB | 4MB / 16MB |
MEMORY | DDR4-3200 | DDR5-4800 |
DEFAULT TDP | 45W | 45W |
TSMC FINFET | 7NM | 6NM |
INTERGRATED GPU | VEGA | RDNA2 |
PCIE | 3.0 | 4.0 |
Both CPUs have 8 cores and 16 threads with the same 3.2GHz base clock, the exact amounts of L2 and L3 cache, and the same TDP. The main difference is that the newer 6800H can boost up to 300MHz higher, based on 6nm, whereas the 5800H is 7nm. Both are based on AMD’s Zen 3 architecture, though. The older 5800H can only be used with DDR4 memory while the newer 6800H only supports DDR5, and the 5800H supports PCIe Gen 3 while the 6800H has faster Gen 4.

To do this testing reasonably, I’ve used the TUF A15 from ASUS and Legion 5 from Lenovo. Both laptops have the same RTX 3060 GPU, but ASUS is powered with 140W, and Lenovo has 130W. The other difference is that one has the older Ryzen 7 5800H while the other has the newer 6800H.
Gaming Performance
I have compared 8 games at 1080p resolution with High settings. So, let’s go ahead and see some interesting benchmarks.
Starting with Watch Dogs Legion, both games were giving more than 60FPS, which is a playable framerate. If we see the difference, 5800H was slightly faster than 6800H. It was 5.7% or 4FPS ahead.
Moving on to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, we find the opposite situation from Watch Dogs, where the 6800H is around 5FPS or 6.6% ahead.
Most people play Fortnite for E-sports, where FPS does matter. And 6800H is the clear winner here, with 5% lead. But if you want to play this game for fun, then you can save money with 5800H.
Cyberpunk 2077 is the biggest competitor of GTA 5; even I love this game more than GTA 5. In both laptops, this game plays just as well. 6800H is the winner but I don’t think 2FPS is that big difference.
Next up we have Red Dead Redemption 2, and again 6800H was just 3FPS or 3.6% ahead. Not a Big Difference!
The God of War results are not interesting. When I played this game, I didn’t feel any difference because 6800H was winning with just 1 FPS.
In Far Cry 6, the Ryzen 7 6800H is slightly faster than the Ryzen 7 5800H, delivering 2.6% greater frames at 1080p.
Finally, the last game on the list is Forza Horizon, where the Ryzen 7 6800H was achieving a 5.6% higher average FPS in this game.
Final Thoughts
If I talk technically, then Ryzen 7 6800H is the latest and a bit more powerful. But it is not so powerful that it can justify its price difference. But if you are getting a 6800H cheaper than 5800H or there is just 40$-50$ difference, then get the newer 6800H. Overall, I think the Ryzen 7 5800H is still a pretty decent chip from AMD in late 2022. But if you’ll be doing tasks that utilize all cores like rendering, then it might be worth spending money on Intel’s 12th gen processors.
