Brave vs Vivaldi: Which Browser is More Private?

Estimated read time 3 min read

The brave browser or the Vivaldi browser are the first things that come to mind when I think of a privacy browser. The purpose of this post is to compare the two browsers and let you know which one is best for you.

What are Both

Considering that brave browser has over 20M users and Vivaldi has around 2.4M users, it is evident that brave browser is more famous based on its popularity. Both browsers are free and are based on the chromium project.

The brave browser is a good option if you want to use a simple browser with a few blocking features, and the vivaldi browser is better for people who desire more features and functionality from their browser.

The Vivaldi Browser and Brave browser are both available for Windows, MacOS, and Android devices, but it is important to note that the Vivaldi browser has not been released for iOS yet.

Syncing Options

Both browser support Syncing. And below is what is supported by both browsers.

Privacy and security

As far as privacy and security are concerned, then I think brave is going to win. This is because it comes with brave shield that takes care of many things for you. It blocks 3rd party cookies and has another feature that is one of the best: the ability to disable ads on every website. It provides a standard level of protection in that it checks for unhealthy websites, downloads, and extensions and sanctions them accordingly.

The Vivaldi browser is also not falling behind, it offers two types of blocking features, which let you block either trackers or ads along with trackers. And it also uses Google services to protect us, which includes phishing and malware protection, DNS help for navigation errors, and autofill assistance.

Search engines

Google is the default search engine of brave browser, but if you open a private window, then it uses brave search.

  • Google
  • Bing
  • DuckDuckGo
  • Qwant
  • Startpage
  • Ecosia

Vivaldi default search engine is Yahoo and if you use it in private mode then it is DuckDuckGo.

  • Google
  • DuckDuckGo
  • Yelp
  • Neeva
  • Ecosia
  • Qwant
  • Startpage.com

Extensions & Customizations

As I mentioned in the beginning, both of these browsers are based on the Chromium project, so you can install any extension from the Chrome Web Store.

The Vivaldi browser is my favorite if we consider the overall customizations.

With the Brave browser, you can install themes, edit the side panel, and adjust the font size according to your preference. In the new tab page, you can also customize the background image and widgets that appear.

My personal opinion is that this is one of the best features that Vivaldi has to offer in that it allows you to customize the side toolbar according to your own preferences. Finally, you can also set commands for mouse gestures so that they can be executed with ease.

Conclusion

There are no major problems with either browser, and they are both safe and reliable. Nevertheless, I believe that most people will choose brave browser because it resembles Chrome browser in terms of its look and feel. In contrast, if you are a tech geek and you want to be able to do a lot more customizations with your browser then Vivaldi Browser may be a better choice for you.
