The RTX 4070, being the more advanced option, offers a whopping 50% more in terms of CUDA, tensor, and ray tracing cores than the RTX 4060. Both are equipped with an 8GB VRAM, and they share identical memory bus, bandwidth, and speed specifications. Their power ranges are also identical, but the 4060 has the edge in terms of boost clock speeds, given that the same power is distributed across fewer CUDA cores.

9 Games Benchmarks
Both laptops can utilize an extra 25 watts courtesy of Nvidia’s dynamic boost. However, in practical gaming scenarios, both the 4070 and 4060 GPUs tend to max out around the 100-watt mark. This implies that there’s no noticeable FPS gain beyond this power level. Now, let’s see some benchmarks.
Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 showcased a relatively minor performance difference. The 4070 outperformed by a margin of 15% at both 1440p and 1080p screen resolutions.
Microsoft Flight Simulator
When it came to Microsoft Flight Simulator, a game known for its CPU-intensive nature, the disparity in performance was more pronounced. The 4070 surpassed the 4060 by 19% at 1080p and by 20% at 1440p.
Forza Horizon 5
Forza Horizon 5 results indicated a 14% and 15% speed advantage for the 4070 laptop at 1080p and 1440p respectively. However, the most notable difference was observed in the 1% lows, which gauge performance drops. The superior score for the 4070 suggests a much smoother and reliable gaming experience.
Hogwarts Legacy
Hogwarts Legacy was tested in Hogsmeade, the 4070 surprisingly underperformed in the 1% lows at 1440p. The reason remains unclear, but this was a consistent observation. However, when it came to average frames per second, the 4070 maintained its superiority.
DOOM Eternal
DOOM Eternal’s performance metrics were intriguing. At the 1080p resolution, the 4060 had a better 1% low, even though the 4070 boasted an average FPS that was 37% greater. This was the most significant FPS difference at 1080p among all the games evaluated.
The Witcher 3
The Witcher 3, when tested with the ray tracing preset activated, showcased the most pronounced disparity at 1440p among all games. The 4070 struggled to surpass 39 FPS, making the 4060’s performance practically unplayable. However, turning on DLSS and frame generation could offer some relief.
Dead Space
Dead Space, known for its GPU-intensive gameplay, showed that the 4070 outpaced the 4060 by 21% at 1080p. This was the second-largest performance gap at this resolution among all games evaluated. Although the 4070 couldn’t quite reach 60 FPS at maximum settings, the availability of DLSS offers a potential boost in frame rates.
Apex Legends
In the case of Apex Legends, the 4070’s performance enhancement was modest. At 1440p, it was the least significant difference among all games, with the 4070 being only 10% swifter than the 4060. Nevertheless, the 4060 was nearly touching 100 FPS at peak settings.
COD: Modern Warfare 2
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 presented a more substantial leap in performance with the 4070, registering a 23% uptick in average FPS at 1440p with all settings cranked up. However, the 4060 still managed to achieve 60 FPS, ensuring it remains a viable option for gamers.
1080p Average FPS in 9 Games
On average over all 9 games tested, at 1080p the higher tier RTX 4070 laptop GPU was 19% faster compared to the lower tier RTX 4060 laptop GPU. This graph shows how much faster each game was on the 4070, and as you can see, results really vary depending on the specific game. DOOM Eternal was the biggest outlier here, doing way better on the 4070 laptop.
1440p Average FPS in 9 Games
If we step up to the higher 1440p resolution where we’re more GPU bound, the RTX 4070 was now 22% faster than the 4060 on average. This time The Witcher 3 is the biggest outlier in favor of the 4070, but it was also tested with ray tracing, so I suspect that’s the reason. At least at 1440p, because the difference was normal at 1080p. Honestly, I was expecting to see a bigger difference, as the 4070 has 50% more CUDA cores, but that wasn’t the case.
9 Games Average
Here’s how frame rates look if we instead take the average of all 9 games. I think this better allows us to visually see the overall differences as a quick summary. It lets us easily see that even over a wide selection of games, the 4070 has a decent performance uplift over the 4060. The 4060 was still able to offer more than 60 FPS on average at 1440p max settings though, not a bad result at all.
Price and Conclusion
The 4070 laptop undoubtedly offers superior gaming performance compared to the 4060, especially when considering the XMG Neo 16 as a reference. While the 4070 model is priced around $300 higher than the 4060 but the 4070 actually ends up being a better value from a cost-per-frame perspective, because the performance difference is bigger relative to the price increase.
If your budget allows, there are instances where opting for the 4070 might be a good choice. However, the 4060 shouldn’t be underestimated; it’s a robust option even without the bells and whistles like FSR, DLSS, or frame generation. Ultimately, the decision hinges on the cost gap. If you find yourself shelling out significantly more than a 20% increase in price for just a 20% FPS enhancement with the 4070, it might not be a sensible investment. And although the 4070 looks more worthwhile compared to the 4060, in many cases I still don’t think that the 4070 is worth it.
